I spent the past week in London and Ireland. I had to go for work, but was smart enough to use 60k miles to upgrade to business class on United. I did get to fly the “triple 7″ or 777, my favorite plane. I fly so much, I know all the makes and models, layouts, pros and cons – that’s dorky. Some notes:
- I suffered the worst jet lag I’ve ever had this trip, getting one terrible nights sleep after another.
- A cold pint of Guinness beer in an Irish pint is one of the sweetest pleasures in life. And you can’t smoke in the Irish pubs, which makes it a real treat. In London, you can still smoke in pubs, which means when you leave, you need to go hack up a nice wad of brown phlegm, it’s charming. Also, the Irish people are so nice and friendly, I need to go back there for a long vacation. The taxi drivers, the people in the hotels and restaurants, and the women. There are number of people in our office there who aren’t Irish, but they’re in Ireland because they met some sweet Irish girl.. awww
- I took some pictures and post them soon
- Europeans live to travel. They have all been all over the world, to remote places, exotic places, places I’ve never heard of, places I want to go, places I don’t want to go, all of the above, some of the above
- The English Pound and Euro are worth more than the dollar and the cost of living is bloody expensive
- The coffee is way better. They don’t even drink drip coffee, they don’t make it. You get a black coffee or a white coffee, black is americano (my drink) and white is with milk (i think that’s a latte). The coffee is good, strong, and not burned. There are some starbucks in Europe, but there are lots of little coffee houses, where you get the good stuff.
- Heathrow airport is massive, and if you go, wear sneakers – you’ll end up walking 2 miles, even if you just go straight to your gate.
- What did I do on the almost 9 hour flight from London to Chicago? Watched “A History of Violence,” which is a very good movie. I also finished watching “Thank You for Smoking,” a clever mockumentary. Well acted and funny, with good humor that doesnt quite cross the line and become annoying.
