Around 10 years ago, my wife and I got married. Soonafter, in a moment of irrational exuberance, we picked up a then bottle of Silver Oak Cab, 1992. It probably cost around $40-$50 back then, appx $125 now. We had enjoyed a bottle of that when we first met, as I got a nice dinner out as a reward for some good work at BPA International (now BPA Worldwide). We went to Sparks steakhouse on the east side and enjoyed an amazing dinner (separate funny story: I was told to take out my then girlfriend for dinner, and the dinner ended up costing $300. I agreed to pay my share and the company would pay $75-$100, but BPA liked me, so they let me expense the whole thing – very nice on their part), including our first bottle of Silver Oak Cab.
Now Silver Oak is known for being a top flight california cabernet. When we saw a bottle in our local Millwood, NY liqour store, Dodd’s, we decided to live a little and get it. We never really got around to drinking it, and so it sat.. and sat.. and sat.. and was packed.. and moved.. again and again and again. After several years, we realized we needed to now save it for a special occasion. Last night we decided it was time, to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. So we cracked it open, however, the cork broke. I thought this might mean it had turned
But after getting the cork out in decent condition, I poured some wine through a coffee filter (I read that on the internet as a good way to get cork out of wine) – it was bold but as smooth a polished marble. After the wine had a chance to breathe some more, the poor thing had nearly suffocated being bottled up for ~10 years – it just got smoother and smoother and smoother. We used a gold coffee filter to pour the glasses to make sure they were pure and enjoyed the whole bottle outside on our terrace and it was worth the wait.
On a side note, the Silver Oak web site is great, lots of info and videos!
